野球シーズン（ベースボールシーズン）

英語では、スポーツ用語を使ったさまざまな表現があります。
やっとモントリオールにも、夏がきて、ベースボールには最適な季節になりました。今回は、スポーツ用語からきた、英語のpopular expressionをみてみましょう！

• touch base with : 連絡を取る
• to strike out : (アウト、三振） 失敗する、しくじる、落第するなど
• home run :（ ホームラン） 恋愛がうまくいく
• drop the ball :（ ボールを落とす） 機会を逃す、間違える
• on the ball : 準備がよくできている、賢い
  例）Mika is very good at her work. She is on the ball.
• step up to the plate : (打席に入る）次は〜〜の番
  例）Now, I am going to step up to the plate!
• hit one out of the park : 大きな成功をおさめる
• throw someone a curve : （カーブを投げる）予期しないことをしたり言ったりする
• covered all of your bases : よく準備をしている
• right off the bat : すぐに行動を起こす
• way off base : まったく間違ったことをする
• out in left field : ちょっと変わった人

  例）He seems like he is out in left field.

• bats both ways : 男性にも女性にも興味がある
• bats for the other team : 同じ性の人達だけに興味がある

Yesterday when I stepped up to the plate to do my presentation I was so worried I was going to drop the ball. Fortunately I had covered all of my bases so when the professor threw me a curve right off the bat I hit it out of the park. He told me I was on the ball and gave me an A. Later that night I was so happy, so to celebrate I went to a bar where I saw Risa. I wanted to ask her on a date but my friend who is usually out in left field told me I would strike out because she bats for the other team but he was totally off base. When I asked her out she said yes. Needless to say I hit a homerun and we decided to touch base the next night before dinner.
