When pigs fly （ありえない！）

Have you ever seen pigs fly? Of course you haven’t. It never happens. So this expression means “Never” in an indirect way. Let’s take a look at the following example.
豚が空を飛ぶのを、見たことがありますか？ありませんよね。そんなシチュエーションは、「ありえない」からです。この表現は、遠回しに「そんなことは、ありえない」と言っているのです。例文を見てみましょう。
Harp: This girl was asked to go on a date by a boy and she really didn’t like him so she said to him, “I will go out with you when pigs fly.” (I will never go out with you.)
Jessie: Oh, that is kind of mean.
Harp: Really mean.
Jessie: Ok, so at first maybe he thought, “great she said she would go out with me” and then she added, “when pigs fly.”
Harp: Exactly, so it was mean.
Jessie: Harp, was that you?
Harp: No it was just a story.
Harp: ある女の子が、あんまり好きじゃない男の子からデートに誘われて、こう答えたの。「デートしてもいいわよ。豚が空を飛んだらね（＝絶対デートしないわ）」
Jessie: 意地悪な言い方ね。
Harp: すっごく意地悪よね。
Jessie: 彼は、はじめ彼女がデートしてくれると思って喜んだのに、その後で「豚が空を飛んだらね（絶対いや）」と付け加えられちゃったのね。
Harp: その通りよ。ひどいわよね。
Jessie: ハープ、それ、あなたじゃないの？
Harp: ちがうわ。たとえ話よ！
